In 1900 Adams County, Nebraska, George H. Gates is a cream gatherer, born January 1866 in Iowa, married ten years to Sarra June 1870 Ohio, have Frank A. May 1890 Missouri, Henry A. April 1893 Nebraska, Charles L. Jan 1896 Nebraska, and Minnie N. Dec 1899 Nebraska.

In 1910 Frontier County, Nebraska, George is farming, 49, Sarah 41, with Henry L. 17, Charlie A. 14, Minnie 11, Melvin 8, and Pearl one month.

Frank is also in Frontier County in 1910, married to Margaret, both 19. She was born in Nebraska.
1912 Wray "George H. Gates and son, Frank, came in for machinery repairs yesterday and report that the crops out their way are exceptionally good and that small grain is the beset they have ever seen it. They come from fourteen miles southeast."
1912 "George Gates and family have moved onto their homestead of Pearl J. Rose's."

George proved up 320 acres in sections 3,4,9 and 10, 1S 42W in 1915."
In 1920 Washington County, Colorado, George H. is 54, grading streets, with Sarah and son Melvin R. 16.

1922 One road gang under George Gates was grading and gravelling the road from Akron to the state hill on the road west.

George Henry Gates, who has been a citizen of Washington County since 1915, and has made many friends here during that time by his friends and his neighborly conduct, went to his reward, at his home, fourteen miles south of Akron, on Monday March 14th 1927.
George had been ill six days with flu, which developed into pneumonia. George Henry Gates was born in Iowa, January 2, 1866 to Alfred Henry and Celina Gates both deceased.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Post at Hastings, Nebraska, Sept 9 1889. He came to Akron in 1915 and entered into the occupation as farmer, where he has since resided south of Akron. He has been a Modern Woodman for about 28 years. George died at the age of 61 years, 2 months and 12 days.
Funeral Services were held today (Thursday) at two o'clock at the Presbyterian church with the local modern Woodmen in charge. S. W.Keasey, delivered the sermon and Walter Gough, funeral Director.
George leaves a wife and five children: five children having preceded him. Those living are: four sons Frank, Henry, Two daughters Mrs. Minnie Davison, all of Akron, Charlie of Woodrow, and Melvin of Lyman Nebraska.
This was one of the largest funerals held in Akron for some time. Neighbors and friends coming from far and near.
Mesdames J. B. Fisher, F. P. Cooley, and James E. Harris constituted the choir, singing: "What a friend we have in Jesus", "Nearer to God to Thee", and "Rock of Ages". Mrs. J. E. Harris was at the piano. The Pall Bearers were: Jack Newman, A. S. Edwards, E. E. Ball, Ed Dey, M. Higbotham and Clyde Bibbons. The earthy remains were laid to rest in the Akron Cemetery. The sorrowing family and relatives have the sympathy of the community in their loss.

Melvin R. Gates, born Jun 7, 1903 in Nebraska, died May 5, 1969 in Sacramento County, mother's maiden naem "Host."

Daughter Melva Rae Gates married Felton O'Mary, and died Oct 25, 2001 in Sacramento.
Melva Rae O'Mary passed away in Sacramento the evening of October 25, 2001 of a massive coronary event. She was born on August 15, 1937 in Fort Morgan, Colorado. Melva is survived by her loving husband of forty-eight years this Halloween, Felton Asburry O'Mary. Her sister Elsie, and her brothers Earl and Gerald Gates. Her four children Felton O'Mary of Sacramento, Minnie Welch of Sparks, NV, Geneva O'Mary of Sparks, NV, and Lowrence Meier of Sparks, NV. Her sons-in-law Ronald Welch, Michael Meier, and her daughter-in-law Lynn O'Mary. Her ten grandchildren Ronnie Welch, Christina O'Mary, Joseph Welch, Brandy Christensen, Aaron O'Mary, Larry Maldonado, Lurena Maldonado, Matthew Meier, Alicia Moldanado. Her five great-grandchildren Zachary Welch, Ryan Welch, Brandyn Welch, Derek Christensen, Joshua Bachman. Her granddaughter Michelle Meier preceded Melva. And countless extended family and lifelong friends. She lived most of her life right here in the River Delta, primarily Clarksburg, CA. Melva O'Mary was a loving wife, a good mother to every child that crossed her path, and a fine lady. Her loving manner, homey wisdom, and quick wit will be sorely missed in a world robbed of her present. Family and friends may call for visitation Monday, October 29, from 3-8 PM, and attend services Tuesday October 30, 2001, both at Sacramento Memorial Lawn , 6100 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA.
CHARLES

CHARLES AND GRACE GATES FAMILY My parents, Charles Gates and Grace Green, were married in Akron, Colorado, one day after World War I ended. They met when father worked for mother's parents during harvest. Father often told how he almost missed getting the marriage license as the doors were closing early because of the news that the war had ended.
To this union six children were born. Eldah, Leonard, Avery, Avalon, LaVonne and Ronald. Father was a farmer and leased land to raise crops. Once he worked for the County Road Dept. The Depression and "Dust Bowl" era forced him to move his family to Washington State in 1939. Eldah had married Dave Driver and they came too. Ronald was three years old.
Father built a bunk house and put it on a flat bed trailer to move the family belongings. Later this was a playhouse for us three younger children. It was August when we arrived in Lewis County and the blackberries along side the road looked so good, but we wondered if we were allowed to pick them. The family worked in the blackberry fields near Puyallup. Then father purchased a home in Dryad for $150.00. He and the boys cut krapwood from the old Dryad Mill, which no longer operated.
We lived one year near Manson at Lake Chelan and worked in the apple orchards. During this year, 1941, Leonard married Edith Davisson. Moving back to our home in Dryad, father worked in the woods and in Lloyd Owens' Mill up Hope Creek. Years later he worked at Rainbow Falls Park. .

I attended a one room school in Colorado and was eight years old when my family moved west. I attended grades three through seven at Dryad Elementary except for one year at Manson. In 1944, the Dryad and Doty Grade Schools were consolidated with PeEll where the high school children already attended.
During World War II, my brother Avery served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific as a parachute packer. For my eighth grade graduation, he sent parachute silk home and mother made a dress for me. In 1948, Avery married Frances Demarest.
The summer after graduating from high school, in 1949, I was one of the first princesses for the Southwest' Washington Fair. I later became a clerk typist at Madigan Army Hospital. In 1954, I met and married M/Sgt. Robert E. Morris. One month after my wedding, La Vonne married Herbert Barr, from Boistfort, who was in the Air Force and had just returned from Libya, Africa. We both were married in the Dryad Church. Ronald served in the Marine Corps and married Lois Orloske from Adna in 1962. Growing up has its memories. Father played the violin and there were many "jam sessions." Mother was a homemaker, good cook, seamstress and handy at crafts. She always had a garden and loved fresh fruit. By Avalon Morris


Charles Leonard Gates 1902-1978 and Charles Leonard Gates 1896-1974 are buried in Chehalis, Lewis Coutnty, Washington # 70122830.
August 1968 "Open house Is planned from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday, at Rainbow Falls State Park to honor Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Gates on their golden wedding anniversary. The two were married Nov. 12, 1918, in Akron, Colo., and moved to Dryad In 1939. Prior to his retirement Mr. Gates was an assistant park manager at Rainbow Falls State Park. Mrs, Gates is a member of the Pe Ell Silvan Gten Rebekah Lodge and the Dryad Garden Club.
Hosting the Sunday event will be the couple's daughters and sons, Mrs. David (Eldan) Driver, and Mrs. Robert (Avalon) Morris, Chehalis, Mrs. Herbert (LaVonne) Barr, Vandenberg AFB, Calif.; Mr. Leonard Gates, Chelalis, Mr. Avery Gates, Qulnault, and Mr. Ronald Gates, Chehalis. The honored pair have 25 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The reception will be at the PeEII Grange Hall If weather conditions are unfavorable. The family requests there be no gifts."

September 1974 "Charles L. Gates, 78, a resident of Dryad since 1939 who moved to Napavine this summer, died at home Saturday. Gates was born Jan. 23, 1896, at Pauline. Neb., and moved to Akron, Colo., where he married Grace Green in 1918. He was a park attendant for 12 years at Rainbow Falls State Park. Survivors include his widow, Grace, at home; three daughters, Mrs. David (Eldah) Driver, Dryad, Mrs. Robert (Avalon) Morris, Chehalis, and Mrs. Herbert (LaVonne) Barr, Napavine; three sons, Leonard of Chelan, Ayery, Quinault, and Ronald of Chehalis; a sister, Mrs. Arthur (Minnie) Davisson, Brush, Colo., an aunt Lenna Post, Wray, Colo., 26 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Chehalis, with the Rev. Donald Bruner, Centralia, officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Brown Mortuary Service. Pallbearers will be Gates' nephews, Alvin, Donald, Dayton, Marvel, Roy, Ray ,and Ivan Green. "



ROBERT AND AVALON MORRIS FAMILY My father, Robert Morris, was born in 1930 and grew up in Moundsville, West Virginia. He is the son of .James and Rose (Frey) Pelley. A track star in high school, he was state champion in the mile run two times. After graduation, he joined the Army taking basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He served two tours in the Korean War, going with the famous Second Division when it shipped out of Fort Lewis in 1950. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. A M/Sgt., again stationed at Fort Lewis, he met my mother, Avalon Gates. Later they were married, in June of 1954.
She was the daughter of Grace and Charles Gates.

Avalon went home to her Savior and King on Dec. 22, 2013 surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer. She was born to Charles and Grace Gates on Aug. 27, 1931 in Akron, Colo. Her parents moved the family to Washington State in 1939 and eventually made their home in Dryad, Wash.
Avalon graduated from Pe Ell High School in 1949. That summer she became one of the first princesses for the Southwest Washington Fair. She later became employed as a clerk at Madigan Army Hospital where she met and married Master Sgt. Robert E. Morris in 1954. Avalon followed her military husband throughout his career and raised six children that were born to the couple in various states and countries where he served. They finally settled in Chehalis and were married for 59 years.
Avalon enjoyed many hobbies and interests-sewing, quilting, painting, traveling, photography, floral arranging, reading, stamp collecting, scrapbooking, writing and collecting dishes. She also enjoyed organizing functions such as family and high school class reunions.
Avalon was a faithful member of the Adna Evangelical Church for more than 45 years, serving in various roles-Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Vacation Bible School storyteller, Youth Group Leader, and President of the women’s group. She passionately supported mission work.
Avalon is survived by her husband; daughters, Cathy Spears, Diane McGuinn, Melody West, Gwendolyn Lawrence and Rachel Morris; son, Robert Morris Jr.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, who were the love of her life.
A visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013 and 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 at Sticklin Funeral Chapel, Centralia. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 at Claquato Cemetery, Chehalis. A celebration of life will be held for Avalon on Friday, Dec. 27, at 1:00 p.m. at the Adna Evangelical Church, 113 Dieckman Rd., Adna, Wash


Ronald Laverne Gates passed away on March 1st losing his battle to prostate cancer at the age of 77. Ronald Gates was born November 23rd 1936 in Brush Colorado to Charles Leonard Gates and Grace Marie Green Gates. Paternal Grandparents were George H. Gates and Sarah E. Post. Maternal grandparents were John Green Jr. and Laura R. Shirley Gates. Ron was the youngest of six children, loving called the caboose by his father. The family moved from Akron Colorado to Washington State in 1939 to escape the dustbowl. Ron grew up in Dryad Washington and graduated from Pe Ell High School in 1954. Ron played football, basketball and baseball for Pe Ell high school. Ron enjoyed the outdoors hunting and fishing. He was also an outstanding athlete. Ron joined the US Marines in 1954 serving two and a half years stationed in Japan and Hawaii as a sharp shooter. He also played football for Centralia and Grays Harbor Colleges. Ron was a pitcher for Bailey’s Real Estate slow-pitch team for over ten years, taking the team to nationals. Ron was a member of the Washington State Officials Association, refereeing and umpiring numerous boys and girls city leagues, high school and college games for nearly 30 years. Ron coached Lewis County Little Leagues, girl’s summer and High School fast pitch teams, taking several of his teams to State Playoffs, earning the honor of Lewis County Sportsman of the year in the 1980’s. On March 23, 1961 Ron married Lois Orloske daughter of Max Orloske and Dora Rayton Orloske. Three daughters were born to this union, Sharlynn, Jolene and Renell. Ron’s second marriage was to Betty Snow Yacom Tapio. Ron also had a brief third marriage. Ron was a past member and superintendent of the Baptist Church and member of Adna Church. After graduating with his AA from Centralia College in 1958, Ron was employed as a mail carrier working his way up to Postmaster serving 52 years in the US Postal Service. He served as Postmaster in Chehalis, Rochester, Raymond and finally Port Angles where he lived and served for 29 years. Ron was named Washington State postmaster of the year and served as National Postmasters Union rep for numerous years. Ron’s life enjoyments included photography, dancing, hiking, traveling, participating, playing and watching sports. He particularly enjoyed watching his grandchildren playing sports. His parents and sister Avalon Morris of Chehalis WA preceded Ron in death. Ron is survived by his brother Leonard Gates of Akron CO, brother Avery of Soap Lake WA, sister Eldah Driver of Chehalis WA, sister Bonnie Barr of Napavine WA, his three daughters Sharlynn Gates spouse of John Sanborn of Lakewood WA, Jolene Kindell spouse of Mark Kindell of Adna WA, and Renell Hull partner with Joshua Bushee of Tualatin, OR and four grand children, Trevor Kindell, Hayley Kindell, Cheyenne Kindell and Hayden Hull. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to his caregiver Rebecca Rice of Napavine, WA for for keeping a smile on his face. Memorial Services will be held at Sticklin Funeral Chapel in Centralia, WA on Saturday March 8th at 11:00 AM. A private interment will be at Claquato Cemetery at a later date. Family requests in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dryad Community Church, the American Cancer Association or Lewis County Veterans Memorial Museum.

Frank Alva Gates registered for WWI with a Henry, Colorado address, born May 27, 1890 at Salem Missouri. He had a wife and four children.
In 1920 Akron, he doesn't have an occupation, 29, with Margaret 28. Bernice 9, Bernard 7, Basil A 4 Bill 2, and Laura nine months.
Frank is farming in 1930 Washington County, Colorado, and they have Bernice I. 19, Bernard C. 17, Basil C. 15, Brice C. 13, Beula E. 11, Blanch M. 8, and Beufard C. 5.
In 1940, still farming in Washington County, they have Beulah 20, Blanche 18, Bereford 15, and Bruce A. 6.

Daughter of Frank Alva & Margret Mae (Etherton) Gates. Married to Luther W. Bates on 10-29-1941 at Sidney, NE. She is survived by her three daughters - Barbara (Lane) McClellen of North Plattte; Margret (Larry) Thompson of Ewing, MO and Patricia (Norman) Crom of Tabor, IA. Her brother Bruce Gates of Brush, CO; sisters-in-law, Leota Gates of Cheyenne, WY & Mosselene Gates of Ft. Collins, CO. Her grandchildren - Judy McClellen of North Platte; Luana McClellen of Omaha, NE; Michael (Annette) McClellen of Papillion, NE and Melanie McClellen of North Platte: Mark (Tami) Thompson of Slayton, MN; Kurt (Lorie) Thompson of Apple Valley, MN; Tim Crom & Tom (Amber) Crom of Tabor, IA. Eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. Beufard Clayton Gates, 83, of North Platte passed away Oct. 15, 2007, at Linden Court. He was born Aug. 13, 1924, in Akron, Colo., to Frank and Margret Etherton Gates. Beufard grew up and attended school in Colorado. He entered the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.
On Dec. 13, 1948, he married Viola Mae Scott. After his discharge he went to work for the railroad in Portland, Ore., moving to Cheyenne, Wyo., and then to North Platte to work for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1949 to 1984, when he retired. Beufard married Myrtle Wing Meyer on April 4, 1965, in North Platte, becoming a father to 10 children and 13 grandchildren. Myrtle preceded him in death April 29, 1986. He worked for the Berean Fundamental Church as a custodian for many years. He was a member of the Berean Church. His family was his life and he was very faithful to them. He enjoyed Husker and Broncos games, painting and sharing art with his family.

Survivors include stepdaughters Phyllis Arlynn (Phil) Webster of North Platte, Lela (Pete) Pyzer of Tryon, Carol Olson, Lorna McCarter, Linda Cooper and Sherry (Wes) Martin all of North Platte; stepson Richard (Tari) Meyer of Alliance; son-in-law Walt Woodward of North Platte; brothers Basil (Mosselene) Gates of Fort Collins, Colo., and Bruce (Ethel) Gates of Brush, Colo.; sister Beulah (Luther) Bates of North Platte; 23 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; stepsons Lynn, Freddy and Donald; stepdaughter Mary Woodward; brothers Bernard Gates and Brice Gates; and sisters Bernice Green, Blanche Baughman and Beatrice Gates.
Blanche Margaret Baughman 1921-2005 is buried in Brush, Colorado # 80570131.


Bruce Albert Gates 1933-2013 is buried in Akron # 121183872, with his wife Ethel Florene Greenfield Gates, 74, of Eaton, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Akron. Interment will follow at Akron Cemetery
Mrs. Gates was born to Everett and Fern Greenfield on May 13, 1935, in Eckley.
She graduated from Yuma High School, and after a brief stint at a Nebraska college, she moved to downtown Denver to work and live. She married Bruce Gates in 1958. They raised their children in the Eaton area, enjoying numerous outdoor activities throughout the years, including camping, fishing, and hunting. She loved dancing, singing, traveling, reading, movies and people.

He was a member of the Red Dale Camper Club, Moose Lodge and Union Pacific Old Timer's. Mr. Gates is survived by his wife, Leota, whom he married Nov. 19, 1936, in Akron, Colo a son, Gene Gates of Commerce, Ga.; three brothers, Basil Gates of Fort Collins, Colo., Beufard Gates of North Platte, Neb., and Bruce Gates of Brush, Colo.; one sister, Beulah Bates of North Platte; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Ann Gates Smith; parents, Frank and Margaret Gates; a brother, Brice Gates; two sisters, Berneise Green and Blanche Baughman; and a grandson.
